Birmingham's boldest women

Parvinder Kaur

Parvinder Kaur, Birmingham's boldest women nominee

Parv Kaur is UK's first female dhol player that has been performing non-stop for the last 25 years.

Growing up in a musical family, Parv’s father, a Guinness Book World Record holder for the first singer in the UK to introduce Bhangra music in 1967, supported and encouraged Parv into her passion.

Parv quickly picked up the traditional Indian instruments normally played by men and started to perform alongside her father in the early 90’s. Parv realised there was a lack of ‘female’ representation in the industry and took it upon herself to start her own Bhangra music band, just like her father.

She founded ‘Eternal Taal’ that has broken through a male dominating industry promoting the art of Indian Bhangra music but also embracing the female talent which was hidden within the community.

Parv dedicates nine hours a week teaching Indian music on a weekly basis in Birmingham. Eternal Taal drew a lot of attention from the UK and abroad in which they got the opportunity to perform on the world’s largest stages like Glastonbury Festival, Graham Norton Show at the LG Arena, Bollywood films, House of Commons, BBC World News, BBC, Channel Four, Dubai Women’s Run and many more. Her hard work has been recognised by the House of Commons and Parv was awarded ‘Contribution to Bhangra Music in the UK’ in 2010.

Achieving what she has without a female to look up to in her field was extremely difficult and she often found herself building her own path. Today, Parv is seen as an idol for young females, achieving what no other female has done. Her 25-year journey has thrived into a career full of encouraged, passion and determination.
