Transforming our city

Commonwealth Games official countdown clock in Centenary Square

The Games are much more than just 11 days of top-class sporting action

It has long been an ambition of Birmingham to host major events, the city bid for the 1992 Olympics!

The venues built for that bid have been used since to host scores of world class competitions. In fact, 95% of Commonwealth Games venues for Birmingham 2022 are already in place.

Over the last 20 years the city has been quietly transforming and improving its infrastructure and this will continue ahead of the Games and beyond.

New homes, improved roads, cycling and walking facilities, better public transport services and purpose-built community facilities have been accelerated thanks to the Commonwealth Games.
