Sustainability in Birmingham

How we did this

  • Carbon-neutrality and a blueprint for the future – We worked with our partners to ensure the Games helped the city tackle climate change and become a healthier place to live. This was done by encouraging the use of public transport and active travel, contributing to BCC’s Route to Zero carbon reduction action plan, the Active Travel Plan and the Air Quality Plan.
  • Reducing Waste and growing a circular economy – Alongside the Organising Committee, we ensured that we significantly reduced waste from the Games by minimising the use of single plastic, by utilising ways to recycle equipment and kit and allowing local businesses to benefit.
  • Key socio-economic issues – Equality, diversity and inclusion were at the heart of Birmingham 2022. We committed to shifting the dial in Birmingham and ensured there were low or barrier free ways to access the Games. All our legacy programmes consider how to reach every part of the city including those who may not ordinarily take part
  • Social Value – Birmingham 2022 was the first Commonwealth Games to be measured on Social Value. Through the Organising Committee’s Birmingham 2022 Social Value Charter and BCC’s Charter for Social Responsibility we •ensured that Games-related contracts brought benefits to local people through upskilling, employment opportunities and working with local communities.
  • Accessibility – We delivered an accessible, inclusive and successful Commonwealth Games that highlighted accessibility in its legacy. As a member of the Organising Committee’s ‘Accessibility Advisory Forum’, we helped define standards and improve accessible information wherever possible, so everyone was able to enjoy the Games.
